If you're going to listen to the Allman Brothers , make sure you have the first four records. The Tom Dowd -produced Idlewild South , their second album, comes off with a little less ferocity than their debut -- which is perhaps the result of reaching for new sounds the second time around.
The countrified flavor of his songs gives an indication of where the band will head in the post- Duane era. Gregg 's "Please Call Home" and "Midnight Rider" are built around piano and acoustic guitar, respectively, and have a different feel than the band's usual twin Les Paul-and-Hammond sound.
Home News. Categories: Anniversaries. It seems that only the studio bonus tracks went back to the original session tapes. Apart from that, as it has always been, 1 Duane's guitar is almost always too low in the mix, and 2 Duane's guitar almost always sounds very tinny - the middle and low frequencies were rolled off.
If you want to hear what the Allman Brothers sounded like, get any of the recent editions of the Fillmore East concerts. My pick is the 5 CD or 3 Blu-Ray audio version.
I bought this album, Idlewild South Mercury pressing , featuring a remix by Keven Reeves and at the same time I bought the band's first album a two disc set with one featuring the original mix and the second disc featuring a remix by from by Keven Reeves.
Only the original mix on the double set has any life to it. The two remastered versions are just muddy messes. No separation.
Heavy on bass. All the life from the original recordings sucked dry. I am having a hard time trying to understand the intent of these mixes, or why anyone at anytime thought they were any good. Case in point, the soul wrenching slide figure and the scorching solo on Please Call Home is buried in compression and has to be almost searched out by the listener.
A classic album, Idlewild South doesn't deserve to be represented this way. Finally got around to purchasing this wonderful classic. A couple of points to note. The Allman Brothers were labeled Southern Rock and when hearing the songs separately on the radio for instance it's fairly easy to agree; however, after listening to this album in it's entirety, what Greg Allman said in an interview many years ago certainly rings true - the Allman Brothers were a blues band, or at least the first incarnation of the band was.
One other point I'd like to make is that Duane Allman was a team player and this album reflects that. I don't think he was ever worried about who plays guitar better. In fact, the entire band were a team that was hard to beat when it came to rockin' the blues. If you have been a fan of the old ABB you will love this, lots of unreleased material on here especially an early Liz Reed and there is another version too cant get enough of that one unfortunately for me I cant play the 4th disc my blue ray wont play it I need a newer one soon that disc has the orginal idewild south on a blue ray disc that's supposed to sound very good with all the music on here and nice color booklet inside get it if you love the old ABB the one I fell in love with almost 50 years ago.
Great album from the ABB. The only negative thing is the length of the set, it clocks in at a little over 30 minutes. But what a thirty minutes. Stellar instrumentation. I love the twin lead guitars and the twin drums, just awesome. Just wish there were some bonus material, but what is here is super.
Well worth the price. One person found this helpful. Perfect sound quality on the G remastered vinyl version. No frills cover. Just one solid album. A great listen. Great deal at that price.
