However, the quality of this brand new remaster left a lot to be desired. I changed the stylus, cleaned the turntable and inspected the record before testing it again-- only to find it always skipped in the same places, and always on that one track and no other.
Star just skips right the way through the song. Awful quality control by the pressing plant. Amazon time to withdraw this item from sale.
Update May 4th Amazon assured me this defective product would be removed from sale, yet here it is available again when every person is leaving 1 star reviews because all this vinyl is defective.
I am yet another customer who ordered the vinyl reissue who has experienced skipping on side 2. My first copy was all but unlistenable. Not only did "Star" skip repeatedly, "Hang on to Yourself" did as well. I returned and ordered another copy. This copy has skips as well.
However, only "Star" skips and it only skips twice. Figure it out Amazon! This is a bad pressing! Then again bad on me for not researching a bit before I bought this reissue. I own Hunky Dory and Aladdin Sane from the same reissue campaign and they sound wonderful, with cool packaging that faithfully replicates the original issues. Brilliant album--Don't buy the reissue on vinyl--I've returned two now due to many skips in the same places on Side 2.
The song star skips multiple times in the same spots. See the other reviews and you'll find that this is a problem with their masters, or how they were all manufactured. The record and needle were cleaned before playing. The needle has around hours on it. There are certainly copies of this LP that skip on side two. My records are cleaned thoroughly before each use as was this album, and no skipping was ever encountered.
As a side note, the remastering of the album is excellent and there was no discernible surface noise from the vinyl. I was reading the reviews for the vinyl reissue of Ziggy Stardust and I have to agree this is terrible. I was looking to have a second copy on vinyl since my clear 90's reissue is getting on and I wanted a backup. This is not the backup anyone wants, side 2 is terrible! I, like so many others have had the worst experience with this reissue, it skips and pops no matter what.
I replaced the first copy I received, writing off the issue I had as poor packaging it was under 2 packs of water , but this copy is the same as the first, side two skips and Star is unlistenable. I want to relive the whole rise and fall, skips that cut entire lines of a song don't make for a good story or a happy Ziggy Stardust experience, I am returning this and will probably wait for the next reissue, hopefully waiting no longer than years.
I ordered the vinyl without reading reviews as I began building my vinyl collection with my essential albums after receiving a beautiful U-Turn Orbit Special in Walnut, grabbing some Elac Debuts, and Sonos Amp adding an essential piece to my existing Sonos setup. I was a little concerned reading the reviews about the potentially bad pressimg of the Vinyl; so, I immediately unwrapped and listened to whole album, and then listened again, as often happens.
Perhaps I won the 'Vinyl' lottery, but I also saw another reviewer mention having skipping issues that resolved when switching to the Ortofon 2M, which is precisely what I am using on an acrylic platter. So, is the pressing overly sensitive to the setup or did I just get lucky?
Who knows, but it sounds great and played now several times through without incident. Bowie was an incredible artist and this album is a masterpiece! Parlophone is stealing your money!
Obviously, I'm not giving a star to the record itself, which is a marvelous piece of art by Mr. Archived from the original on 2 September Retrieved 13 June Archived from the original on 5 March Retrieved 1 March Archived from the original on 18 March Retrieved 3 April Archived from the original on 28 August February Archived from the original on 11 November Archived from the original on 24 April Retrieved 16 January Archived from the original on 28 April Retrieved 30 April Library of Congress.

One was his adoption of three lads from Hull as his backing band, renaming them the Spiders From Mars and thus making the wild Les Paul stylings of guitarist Mick Ronson an essential element of his sound. The second was young David''s choice of producer. Most people associate Tony Visconti the man who gave Bolan his glam sheen and who had played on and produced the aforementioned metal album The Man Who Sold The World with this period. It was, in fact, with his previous album Hunky Dory that DB found the perfect studio partner for this phase in his mercurial career.
The pairing of Bowie with Ken Scott at Trident studios allowed him to finally nail a simple format of guitar, bass, drums and piano into the place where the New York nihilism of the Velvet Underground met a quintessentially English way with a tune and a vocal. Ziggy represents the peak of their achievement.
Having perfected the format Bowie took his greatest leap forward by taking a cycle of songs and moulding it into a loose story of the nominal Ziggy and his Christ-like rise and fall at the hands of adoring fans. It allowed Bowie to take the central role onstage, hiding behind a mask of glamorous decadence that some would say hes yet to renounce.
The songs weren't bad either. The part sci fi, part demi-monde narrative unfolds via the sophisticated use of shifting perspectives, beginning with "Five Years" and its tale of despairing humanity at the brink of destruction.
