This was, I believe, Dr. John's first album, and he really had the hoodoo going. Supposedly, at the time Dr. John was concerned enough that he actually consulted a couple of voodoo doctors to make sure he wasn't accidentally conjuring up some evil spirits he didn't want to fool with.
Transports you to the swamps of Louisiana for with that voodoo vibe. You wonder if you are in a priest or priestess back room cooking up a potion or New Orleans club. Very interesting music. Cd arrived in good condition. John, the who do voo doo musical king. Wanted this version of "Walk On Gilded Splinters" and some psychedelic creole gumbo. Hmm umm good. One person found this helpful. Awesome - listening to this album is akin to eating a big ole bowl of jalapeno cheese grits or gumbo.
Love the lyrics especially guilded splinters. If you like funk, fusion and plain old grit - this is the album! This time period for the artist was fraught with performance art on stage but that never overtook the music. Special, expert recordings of those times, that place. Replaced my old vinyl of this album. Still a favorite recording from that period. Creole, Cajun, swamp-rock, whatever you want to call it, it's fun and interesting AND it's performed by an expert musician in music of the region.

Absolute classic is this Dr John album, from about when I gather he thought he might make a few dollars by playing around with a voodoo sort of sound. Great idea. This is a voodoo psychedelic classic from dr john, not sure what it was recorded on but sounds like an old 4 track yet sounds good and what lyrics!
Gris gris is the name given to spells that can be specifically made for an individual to either help themselves or help or the opposite to another. Very trippy stuff and never loses its appeal. HIGHly recommended to those fugus pharmacists among you. For anyone upgrading their old LP to this cd will be delighted as it sounds more detailed more 'hi fi'.
It dos'nt mention in the notes about remastering, but that's how it sounds. The music itself is hot and humid swirling in atmosphere Still new to the sound of Dr. This is a great album to start with. Musically a little too strong, but I am happy to purchase at the second hand price.

We did the snake a la gris-gris calimbo to frame our thing into the medium of down under yonder fire. We walked on gilded splinters to shove my point across to you whom I will communicate with shortly through the smoke of deaux-deaux the rattlesnake whose forked tongue hisses pig Latin in silk and satin da-zaw-ig-day may the gilded splinters of Aunte Andre spew forth in your path to light and guide your way through the bayous of life on your pirougue of heartaches and good times Push and the shove that you need to get your point across no matter what the cost.

Allen Toussaint — a modest, gentle genius. Just how many wondeful New Orleans sides were really created by Allen, almost countless.
Irma Thomas — to this day probably the most negected and unerrated of all soul singers. The Queen of New Orleans soul indeed. Dr John — one of the great phonies and opportunists. A nothing in the s, a big something in the 60s and 70s. I mostly agree with you Sam. But Mac Rebbenak was deeply ground into New Orleans music culture.
Mimicks are still more talented then the average person, while originators are few and far between. Sadly, due to all of the inherent racism in our institutions, it took a white Syncretist to bring the authentic sounds of the black creole culture into the national mythology. However, considering all of the classic Creole idioms and proverbs that Mac spouts on this album, it is much more likely that he is referring to a Creole legend of an eponymus little girl who was blamed for all manner of wrong doings in the Creole home.
Thank you for this. Almost forgot how I completely love this album. Great to read this in-depth article. David, thank you for reaching out. The first quote is from an interview with Dr. The second is from another interview with the Dr. Hey sorry for the delay! This is much appreciated. Are those violins in the background?
If so, strange addition there. John's distinct style. No dark vibes in sightt on this one, but the vocal melody being so good makes up for that. Overall, I only take away one point because despite how cool this music sounds, it doesn't always translate into being listenable. Still, it's awesome. John has entered the building! See all reviews.
