Ella's voice is so 3D.. If you know this classic, you will hear what you've been missing with this pressing Great , but The music is classic and …well as the title said…delightful! Great sound! Absolutely breath-taking!
I thought I had it good with the Speakers Corner copy, but this one blows it out of the water completely. It is difficult to find words to describe the experience of listening to this record. Personally, I felt like I was eavesdropping on a very private, intimate session between these two giants of jazz.
I felt like I wasn't supposed to be sitting there with them, and yet, I was. Only when the music stopped was I reminded that it was just a vinyl record. Just get it while you still can. Beautiful, beautiful stuff here. Oh my!! There is a good reason the all time classics are just that, this album is a prime example. Albums like this stay in rotation forever. His career spanned five decades, from the s to the s, and different eras both musically and also in terms of U. Coming to prominence first as an inventive player, Armstrong attracted notice for shifting the focus in his records from collective improvisations to turn-by-turn solo performances. Like Fitzgerald, Armstrong picked up popular nicknames, in his case "Pops" and "Satchmo", that stuck, and critics praised him by the s as a sort of elder statesman of popular music.
Fitzgerald appeared in many duets in the Forties, appearing on recordings with, among others, The Ink Spots, Louis Jordan and Louis Armstrong as well as a host of instrumentalists from the Jazz At The Philharmonic troupe.
Fitzgerald allowed Louis to choose the keys in which to sing the repertoire and together they recorded the first of three albums, Ella and Louis. The studio album came out when both figures were at high points in their careers commercially. The recording sessions getting started in August , the tracks specifically featured Oscar Peterson on piano , Buddy Rich on drums , Herb Ellis on guitar , and Ray Brown on bass.
