Throughout, she exudes the dangerous allure of a s pulp pinup, the kind with racecar red lips and a dagger in her boot. But it's not all snarls and stilettos: "Kentish Town Waltz," with its promise that, "you're the one for all my life," goes for the heartstrings instead of the jugular. It's the perfect soundtrack for a greaser couples' first dance. Newswire Powered by. Archived from the original on 3 June Retrieved 12 April CS1 maint: discouraged parameter link N.

Modern female singers tend to have engineered voices and their music tends to be of the lowest caliber lacking any sort of soul. I all about gave up on them. Then Imelda May came along. I must say, I was blown away.
Firstly - by the vocals and very cool lyrics. This isn't your typical longing perpetually stuck in teenage form. Oh no, this is how love and many, many aspects of it can be seen through the eyes of a grown, sassy, and confident woman, who just happens to have a knack for stringing together amazingly tuneful melodies and hooks.
Now, it must be said, she has one of the best bands in the world - this is apparent from the moment you hear Darrel Higham amazing Gretch. The wind instruments are also superb, as is the rhythm section. They play like a highest-caliber jazz band, yet their focus is obviously rockabilly revival.
I remember back in the nineties, when after grunge's anxiety-filled era, people experienced a brief sense of pure fun and listened to swing and ska bands. It was quickly replaced by synthetic pop and its um-pa-dum-pa glitter. How thankful I am to Imelda and her band for making "pop"? Her songs tend to range from upbeat songs filled with curious, to say the least, characters Psycho to reflective beautiful ballads Kentish Town Waltz , with more air time given to the former kind on this CD.
Which is great, actually, because she manages to cram so much sass and attitude into each of these, it's a pure delight to listen to over and over. Her voice can glide with apparent ease across slower or high-flying numbers, but manages a bluesy "growl" when a need arises, like on get-even opening song.
An enhanced version of this CD contains a few mp3s More Mayhem with some neat arrangements of the songs from the main album and a couple of bonus tracks. The funky "Inside Out" and energetic "Road Runner" are the standouts there. I, for one, can't wait for more from this talented and beautiful artist from one of the most amazing cities of the world. Mayhem hasn't done that for me. For me, all the songs on this album begin to blend into one long song, no stand alone track that holds its own. That said, I would listen to the album again-but it wouldn't be my first choice of Imelda May's. I do recommend the album, as I would in no way call it bad, just a tad lacklustre for me.
Saw Imelda and her fabulous band play live on the Graham Norton tv show. They performed "Inside Out" and I was absolutely blown away by the band and this song. I ordered the album immediately. It's great - but for one little niggle. The version of "Inside Out" on this album is way slower than the version I heard on the telly. And it's not as good as the faster version. So, as that was the reason I bought the CD, I am very disappointed. However, because Imelda and her band are so talented and the songs are good I have only knocked off one star.
Her rockabilly influences are obvious but you can also hear traces of all the other fabulous music this talented girl has grown up with and soaked up as she has progressed. Absolutely love this, one of the few musical offerings I have played every track on and actually liked every track. Then it took a bit longer to buy the CD.
Why did I wait? This is original, eclectic, fun, witty and Imelda can really sing! Like Nuttini, the music lulls you into a false sense of security with its familiar rhythms but the lyrics have all the edginess expected from a modern writer. There is a raw sensuality to many of them too.
The production is spot on, with a punch sound and clarity that allows every nuance of the vocals to shine through. Now if I can only find a local gig to hear her live!
Difficult to review this product as it is after seeing Imelda last night with her band at wolverhampton Wulfrun hall It was from this I was able to derive the fact that although the songs are strong and performances are tight it pales as an album compared to the sheer energy and visual dynamics of the live setting. That is not to dismiss this product it is still very much a quality one and a worthy addition to most CD collections but I just find it is maybe lacking some of the rawness and energy of the live setting What other items do customers buy after viewing this item?
