Anyone that's thinking of buying this has a good idea of what they are going to hear. Buy it and enjoy. Great stuff. They are so in tune with each other. The song The Thrill is Gone, is worth the price alone. Very good stuff. I am so happy to have finally discovered this disc.
It is very fine music, with many highlights, including a wonderful version of "A Friend of the Devil" on which Grisman's mandolin sparkles, stealing the show. I still go back to 60's music, the first music I loved, for comfort and inspiration, and there is not much that has stayed with me better than acoustic Dead, such as American Beauty and Workingman's Dead.
This joins that group of favorites. Great album received from a great seller. Fast shipping. The beautiful tone of the mandolin. The ultimate collection of the audiophile.
One person found this helpful. I have all of the released collaborations between Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. This album, in my opinion, even surpasses just barely the excellent album Shady Grove by these two artists. There is a version of their epic song Arabia on this album, as well as other excellent songs, like Friend of the Devil, originally released by Garcia's band The Grateful Dead.
Five Stars! Great product, arrived on-time, as advertised. A fabulous reissue of one of the great late Garcia collaborations. Jerry was sick up and fed with the Grateful Dead and the pressure of being the "head hippie" buy this time, and his respite was in the basement studio of his friend David Grisman.
It is great to hear Jerry happy and playing music simply for fun. The Mofi reissue is spot on perfect - way better than that original cd release in terms of transparency, presence and dynamics. You will feel like you are in the studio with the band, and having a rollicking good time. Grab a copy while they are still available. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. I am writing this review as what appears to be a rogue reviewer rated it at two stars and that somehow has brought the overall score down despite many 5 star reviews listed. This is one of my favourite acoustic albums. When Jerry Garcia died he took with him an irreplaceable wealth of know-how, which is rather a sad thought. The musicianship is so accomplished and flowing that at times it seems deceptively easy. I used to have this CD years ago and loved it, but lost it during a house move.
I'm so happy to have it again. It's just brilliant - Garcia and Grisman play so well and the tunes are just lovely. Report abuse.
Translate review to English. Personalmente ne vale la pena. Soddisfatto dell'acquisto e consiglio a tutti quelli a cui piace la musica a corda e non solo. What other items do customers buy after viewing this item?
The atmosphere is reminiscent of the legendary gypsy-jazz exchanges between Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, and equally sharp. Swirling with Middle Eastern modality, the closing minute-plus rendition of Grisman's rippling "Arabia" — complete with a section based on a Cuban fold theme — is alone enough worth the price of admission to this sensational session.
But there's so much more. The quartet delves into Celtic themes "Two Soldiers" , jazz-grass "Grateful Dawg" , old-world ballads "Russian Lullaby" , and Appalachian flavors "Walkin' Boss" with nonpareil skill and soulfulness. Garcia and Grisman's tandem picking throughout epitomize sublime. And for many listeners, the duo's revised version of the Grateful Dead staple "Friend of the Devil" ranks as the finest-ever recorded, the pace patient, the narrative vocals heartfelt, and the synchronous solos tailor-made for the enveloping progression.
Better yet, it's all captured in astonishing fidelity. Stay In The Loop Subscribe to our newsletter to stay updated on pre-orders, release dates and special offers.
