John Mayall And The Bluesbreakers A Hard Road

John Mayall And The Bluesbreakers A Hard Road

Top reviews from other countries. I love this album. It's my favourite John Mayall album, no contest. And, for my money, much better than the Beano album as good as that is. This might be because I grew up listening to it.

But then I had the Beano album as well. In fact I had the former on cassette only, and the latter on vinyl or rather my parents did. What I especially love about this album, aside from John Mayall's usual genius, and the excellent musicians he surrounded himself with - guitarist Peter Green who died not long after I first posted this review and drummer Aynsley Dunbar are both particularly brilliant - is both the range of the music itself and especially the haunting quality of certain numbers.

None of your turgid modern blues-jam type chugging, instead lots of fresh and varied takes on the rich and expressive traditions of the blues. A sublime recording, and in this iteration - with all the extra tracks - a stunning package. Essential music from an exciting bygone era.

A real must-have Okay Amazon, firstly sort yourselves out and separate your reviews of vinyl from those of CDs. There's so many annoying reviews to wade through to get even an idea of the product that's for sale and whether a purchase is worth the money. There's been a lot of reference to this flaw of late, so heed the public's demand. Great cover almost the same as the original but the words 'and the' have carefully replaced the Decca logo and with only a 'Vinyl Lover's logo on the reverse of the sleeve to indicate that this is a grm reissue.

The sound quality of this vinyl edition is faultless. This is a perfect repro copy and contains none of the additional tracks found on various CDs. It's the classic track album, to be played and enjoyed as a reminder of the British Blues Boom of the late '60s and where Mayall reigned supreme.

Peter Green's short contribution to Mayall's ever-changing, evolving sound is legendary. His playing surpasses superlatives! A highly recommended album. This CD was purely bought for Peter Green's guitar playing. I first heard this album 53 years ago, after borrowing it from a library. His playing on this CD is the equal to anything he did with Fleetwood Mac, a real standing neck-hair experience.

The copious bonus tracks are also very good but do not contain his guitar work. Would recommend this to any fan of his work and as a lesson in how to communicate emotion with music. A classic album, with almost 80 minutes of quality blues, at a giveaway price. Hard to avoid repeating other reviewers, but this is a blistering album of engaged and electrifying blues playing, including some beautifully scintillating guitar from Peter Green, with some lovely sustain to deliver some luminous hanging chords.

Mayall's on the money here too, with some impressive playing and keyboard work. Green's contribution is acknowledged already on certain tracks, but there are also some really impressive ensemble tracks where exquisite guitar is only one element from an outstanding mix.

A wonderful combination of bonus tracks gives this album its long running time, and there is little sense of any filler material at all although to my ears, two versions of 'Leaping Christine' is two too many! Some of the unsung tracks mentioned above were 'B' sides of singles, while a great 4-track EP with Paul Butterfield is included, and a BBC recording of another four tracks from Really this is just mouth-wateringly good. If you have any interest in the blues this is a 'must' for the collection, and if you're new to this area, this is a very good place to start.

Other albums worth exploring after this include the essential Blues Breakers , with Clapton, and the vibrant acoustic set The Turning Point. Gorgeous, glorious stuff. A classic British Blues album by a great band including a young lad who had the unenviable job of following 'God' But never fear, Peter Green was possibly the only person who could have done this successfully.

His playing on this album is sublime, flowing, beautiful and at times makes you ache with the emotion of it. His singing, when utilised, is also pretty damn good! Aggressive Bittersweet Druggy. Energetic Happy Hypnotic.
