Coming from an era when live instrumentation was used instead of turntables, this was a pleasant surprise. Starting a solo set, to a trio, then a full out band. All are very well done. As someone who loves live music as opposed to turntables on a stage it caught me off guard, thinking everyone in music nowadays under 50yrs are Anyone, old head, who is looking for newer music that has a bit of that old flavor to make you feel the music in a way that is beginning to fade from the industry should enjoy this one.
It actually has love songs that sound touching instead of sex songs, thought provoking lyrics instead of endless meaningless, repetitive chorus' and a band that can bring it. If you're looking to find another guitar hero. John could be your guy This was the concert that finally turned me on to John Mayer. The second set, the blues set, specifically finally showed me what a musician, and outstanding guitarist John Mayer actually is.
The first set, the acoustic set, while good for an acoustic set, did nothing for me. Then he came out with the blues trio, and I heard John Mayer sing and play guitar like I've never heard him sing and play.
It's light years beyond anything you've ever heard on the radio, and a side of Mayer most people have never heard. If you don't like Mayer because of his facial contortions, and his whiny voice, then get a copy of this and watch how that 2nd set totally changes your mind about what a giant this guy actually is as a musician. He's so good as a blues guitarist, it'll just blow your mind When John is splaying, this is a great video. When he is obsessing over drivel like clothes or watches, you wonder if he has any idea how ridiculous he looks.
The vocal performances are seriously flawed by Mayer's lousy mic technique and poor microphone selection. I find it challenging to find decent concert videos. This one is great. This has 3 different acts, each cool in its own way.
Then turn it up and enjoy! Only 5 stars? I would rate this recording of John Mayer at 10 stars if I could! And the others that play with him This entire BluRay recording has become a jewel in my collection. My wife and I had not really heard much of Mayer's music before watching this. Now, I for one, am a super fan and look forward to buying as much of his stuff as I can.
If you love great rock and blues sounds The live concert released in featured three separate performances: the first was an acoustic set by Mayer alone, the second was with the John Mayer Trio, and the third with Mayer's regular touring band. Johnson - drums Tim Bradshaw - keyboards, lap steel guitar, backing vocals Bob Reynolds - tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone Brad Mason - trumpet, flugelhorn The three concerts indicate that Mayer doesn't want to be categorized, as all three concerts vary greatly.
What's really interesting about this concert is that he has taken the best of his tracks mainly from the Continuum album and given it a whole new feel and sound.
Even the guitar solos are better than the originals. The opening song Neon is the best version of that song I've heard him perform anywhere. He also introduces 2 new songs one original and one cover In Your Atmosphere and Free Fallin' which sounds amazing.
The Trio set is just drop-dead blues at its best. The energy between the three is just insane and they really managed to kick it up a notch after the acoustic set.
You also get to see a very different side of Mayer which is quite unusual, and it's most present during his solo of the blues jam Out Of My Mind. The Band set is what everyone was waiting for.
The instrumentation is perfect and it just goes well with all the songs he performs. The highlight of the band event was obviously Gravity, which is his best performance of that song ever! The singing, the solo, the energy! It's just perfect! So overall this is DVD is definitely worth your purchase. Its shot using high definition cameras and really has a nice, sharp quality to it. A must buy for all Mayer fans, you'll never look at him the same way again! Sign In. Get a sneak peek of the new version of this page.

Then the last disc is the full band, playing all the favorites, doing their thing as usual. I could listen to this album over and over and over again.
Its great, well recorded, nicely balanced, and John Mayer. Do you need any more reasons? I got this cd because I love John Mayer's live performances and was not disappointed with this excellent 2 cd set.
In fact, he is one of the few artists who really excels in the transition from the studio to the stage. As for the overview on this cd, there are three sub-sets to the performance beginning with the acoustic set. Many times artists bore me with acoustic sets but I found myself listening intently on this cd as Mayer's guitar work is quite good The trio set is almost all blues which again has the tendency to wear on me after awhile but every song is done so well it makes for great listening.
The band set is an excellent collection of his more popular songs with only "Why Georgia" being repeated from Any Given Thursday. As good as this cd is though, A. T is a much better live cd one of the best out there and has much better live versions of his earlier stuff.
It doesn't have the acoustic and blues material that this one does though, so really both live cd's compliment each other very well. Highly recommend. Young Johnny Boy is really starting to shine with his 30 years of maturity. I really never cared for his popish stuff a few years back pre electric guitar playing.
He was good, but not really my style. Since he has been doing the electric thing with his trio and has played with some very veteran blues guys not to mention any names for these past few years, I think he has made some huge leaps and bounds.
Something he was always into personally but did not show that side of himself until the last few years. Now he is really expanding more and more as an artist. Pretty amazing how he can pull off the SRV and Hendrix vibe but really doing his own thing while making his own statement. I have to admit, I really like his acoustic playing and singing on the this CD. I like his vocal quality much more now which is showing his maturity as a singer.
Being an excellent guitarist and vocalists, you can go a lot farther in today's market. Anyway, look forward to listening to him for years to come. Great CD. Also bought the DVD of this live concert. I knew some of the songs and like those. I need to listen to more to learn what songs I will like. I think John Mayer has a sexy voice and us good looking. One person found this helpful. My wife has always enjoyed John Mayer's music. Myself, I've learned to like it. The concert is divided into three sections: acoustic, electric blues, and rock.
Electric blues has always been a favorite of mine, so I settled into that part of the concert first. In the past, John's guitar work has been too laid back for me, so I really wasn't expecting a strong set. I was impressed. Heading back to the acoustic section, I found that I preferred his acoustic arrangements of "Neon" and "Daughters" to that of the originals.
The acoustic guitar and John Mayer seemed to be made for each other. Finally, I listened to the section with John and his band.
If you haven't seen him live in concert, this is pretty close. If you have, you'll be able to relive the moments. John's lead guitar work is on par with some of the best. Overall, I enjoy this CD.
My wife has requested that I order one of my own and stop taking hers. I'll be honest, I didn't know if I had heard a John Mayer song before this, he was not on my musical radar.
I heard his son "Gravity" being used for a dance routine. I tried lots of songs titled "Gravity" before I found the right one. It was his "Live in Los Angeles" version. Good grief, there are still musicians who can really wail and whose music sounds better in the live versus studio cuts. I love this album.
He can really handle the blues and makes each song, his own. I'll give him the ultimate compliment. If he is playing live within miles, color me there.
His audience could use a little color. I was not a huge John Mayer fan before hearing some tracks from this album get thrown into my online radio stations.
After listening to the whole album a few times, I was hooked. The 3 distinct sets acoustic, trio, and full band are awesome and make for a varied but complete listening experience.
Mayer's guitar work is stellar, no surprise there, and the players that accompany him are standouts as well. The mix of this album also is a huge plus; the sound and layers of the instruments, vocals, and crowd are spot on and the setlist is great.
Give it a listen! See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Like all live albums, you have to be in the right mood for it, but this one is unusual in that Mayer splits the concert into three parts - acoustic, trio and full band. What comes across is a man who is first and foremost a musician, confident enough to perform excellent cover versions of Jimi Hendrix songs as well as different arrangements of his own songs. If that sounds a little worthy, be ready to be hit with some brilliant rock and blues songs, showcasing his talents as a guitarist and singer - whether solo or backed by top guys like Steve Jordan drums and Pino Palladino bass.
