This group had their moment of fame largely due to the lead singer Lynn Carey having appeared as a centerfold in a man's publication. While a nice marketing gimmick, it sold the talents of Ms. Lynn and the band cheaply. Lynn has amazing vocal range, less prone to shriek and more apt to go for a lower range to phrase her vocals and she does justice to all her songs.
She's fronted a bit more than the fine backing band and I'm sure that was no accident but it's not a knock against the album. Just a slight to a solid band. Suffering from the inevitable comparison to Janis Joplin or Lydia Pense of Cold Blood, Lynn Carey is neither and it would have been nice if she and the band could have gone further.
This is a great retro "Hippie" album that is still fresh and very good. As I listened to the rest of the album I was impressed with the consistent quality of singing, musicianship, and general innovativeness of the album. Lynn Carey is not Janis Joplin; she doesn't have to be. The band is solid, energetic, and talented. Made in the early '70's the sound quality, and musical relevance has held up to the test of time: this isn't just for "collectors". Years later, on a fluke, I searched and found this CD.
This two album collection is a great buy and well worth owning; I hope you enjoy. Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase Not to take anything away from the rest of the band - they were all very good - but wow, Lynn Carey is one amazing singer and a damn fine writer as well.
She sings like a blues master at top volume most of the time, with a lustiness unequaled in rock music. Carey is unique, and great. Mama Lion's two albums are both on this cd in good sound I have the digipack reissue , and the album artwork is reproduced as well. Highly recommended. A Very good album!!!
