The opening track "Daydreaming" wakes up slowly like a lost soundtrack cut from "The Hangover," "Listen for a while to the neighbors having sex; Wishing I could lay my aching head against your breast.
McCauley's grizzled vocals convey a sound of longing, regret and desire. The title track from this self-titled set rocks like a slaphappy freewheeling washboard ditty, "Stay hydrated from a double shot; Get my nourishment from a punch in the gut.
How could I say that I'll stay when I won't? I never said I had a head on my shoulders; I said that I'll love you when we're older. This is a delightful set not to me missed! I am not one to write a lot of reviews.
I only do so when compelled by the product. This is one of those! The lyrics are so well thought of This album for me has a Deja Vu quality that makes it very special. This inspite of the fact that I had never heard any of the group members before. Inspite of the fact that I purchased this album on an impulse and a whim after listening to their one song on npr.
Highly recommended. Donald E. Gilliland Top Contributor: Rock Music. I'd agree with the reviewer that called this one of the best albums of the year. I've listened to this album as much as anything else this year. This is a flawless collection of songs that flow and soothe and move and inspire.
I'm a fan of Dawes so I thought this might be good too, but it exceeded my expectations. I love the singing, the songs, the lyrics, the whole package. I realize that albums like that are destined to remain under the radar, but why hasn't this garnered more favorable press? Bought this after I got into Deer Tick from hearing about them from playing with Lucero another really cool honest band that I got into a few years back - check em out if you ndon't know them. Great stuff.
So I bought Born on Flag Day and dug it. Started looking for other stuff and kept seeing great reviews on Middle Brother so picked it up. Awesome disc from end to end! Just great stuff.
Shared it with friends and they all agree. Any doubts, pick it up and it will be in your rotation constantly! Now I have to grab some Dawes and Delta Spirit! Love finding new music. Thanks for the reviews everyone! Three songwriters at the top of their game have teamed up here to produce an album of timeless tunes Great lyrical pieces wrapped around a solid American musical foundation of blues, country, folk, and rock.
John McCauley of Deer Tick, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, and Matt Vasquez of Delta Spirit are the voices of this album, from three bands traveling the same under-the-radar road of straight-forward, no indulgences music, which stands on its classic songwriting rather than on a gimmicky hip-for-the-moment sound.
These songs will always work. McCauley lends his rough and tumble, life-beaten voice and words, Goldsmith brings heartfelt ballads and stirring harmonies, and Vasquez, who I was less familiar with, is an enormous vocal presence, with a voice that has tinges of rock n' roll John Lennon and songs that are easily the most catchy on the record.
The great thing about this album is that, if you've never heard of any of these three bands, you'll most likely come away from your first listen with three new bands to check out I can vouch for the back catalogs of Dawes and Deer Tick, which are well worth your time.
I'll be checking out Delta Spirit soon! If you're already a fan of these bands, you won't be disappointed with this collection. Some of their finest work can be found here. It's especially great to hear them each take a verse on the closer, "Million Dollar Bill". The live show particularly Dawes is outstanding and very much recommended as well!
I thought the album would be better as a whole. Awesome album and even sounds better on vinyl. Came packaged well and plays great. I'm a fan of all these cats, so I figured I'd love this album. I was right. It usually takes a few listens before I really get into a new album. This one, however, was the bee's knees right from the get go. If you like Dawes, Delta Spirit, and Deer Tick the "parent" bands , or Jonny Corndawg he makes an appearance , then this one won't disappoint.

The individual signatures of all three main men are to the fore but they coalesce in such a great way to make this albums stand as testament to their individual work and also a work of excellence in it's own right. I have had this for a couple of weeks now and cant stop wanting to play it.
Got to this through Goldsmith of the Dawes.. Excellent album of modern californian Americana music. Bought it in Florida n holiday park avenue CDs Orlando. First listen was ok first and last tracks made an impact but after each extra listen each track grew on us both.
Had it in the car since I got back and even bought the vinyl version. Great music no real guitar solos though with varied vocal style.
Have since bought a couple of delta spirit and deer tiCk CDs to add to the 3 Dawes albums. By the way the Dawes are excellent live. I didn't realise this album came out in ,you wouldn't think so. A great mix of acoustic and a bit of grunge make a great album. Well worth a listen. John J. Sie alle sind hierzulande kaum bekannt. Sehr zu Unrecht. Independent ist bei dem Projekt mehr die Marktpositionierung als die Klangrichtung.
