I've been listening to various releases of the Robert Johnson recordings and these reissues this disk and the companion Vol 2 of the Columbia transcriptions are by far the best. At the cost of leaving in more of the hiss and scratches, the timbre of Johnson's voice has more depth, is less muffled, and sounds much more like a real human voice.

The character of the voice and the nuances in inflections are more readily apparent. Of course, not the quality of modern recordings but a quantum leap above the other issues of the Johnson Recordings available, which have been so heavily manipulated to "sound better" that Johnson's remarkable voice sounds like it's been strained through socks in comparison. If you have any interst in the blues, these versions of these landmark recordings will you closer to Johnson's voice and guitar work.

Bob Dylan once said that "it felt like a ghost had come into the room, a fearsome apparition" when he first heard the LP 'King of the Delta Blues Singers' in Robert Johnson's intense guitar playing combined with his haunting voice and stark, elemental songs created something utterly compelling. These momentous recordings should be a cornerstone of any blues collection along with Volume II.

However this album is inspiring because it takes the listener back in time and you can feel the dust in the cotton fields, the hot sun, the emotion in the songs and the playing. Very pleasurable and a good start for listening and understanding the blues.

Did Johnson really make a pact with the devil at the crossroads? Who knows, but the story sure adds mystery to the brilliant playing of this man from the delta. Report abuse. Not so. After the latter compilation was released they rediscovered a collection of better source material which had lain forgotten about in the vaults since the s.

And the improvement that brought to these recordings is immense. There is still some surface noice and a little distortion here and there on vocal peaks, but the astounding upgrade in fidelty achieved with the newly discovered sources cannot be overstated.

The difference really is one of night and day between this collection and it's predecessors. You'll still be missing a few tracks from the "Complete Robert Johnson", but for the phenomenal upgrade in sound, that's a VERY small price to pay.

For many musicians and fans of the blues, this is one of those "where it all started for me" albums. I would recommend having a listen to the track samples before you buy as it may be an aquired taste for some. I like it as a change of mood. Late night music. Many thanks.

Robert Johnson is perhaps the most hyped Delta blues artist; for good reasons because the performances display uniformly great passion and because RJ was perhaps the most astute of the early bluesmen in getting his message across to a larger audience.

This album "King of the Delta Blues" contains many of Johnson's best recordings. The Complete Recordings peaked at number 80 on the Billboard chart. The album sold more than a million copies, [1] and won a Grammy Award in for " Best Historical Album. Prior to his death in , through the help of H. His complete canon of recordings includes these 29 masters, plus 13 surviving alternate takes, all recorded at two ARC sessions held in San Antonio and Dallas, Texas. The Mississippi Delta —two hundred miles of fertile lowlands stretching from Memphis, Tennessee, in the north to Vicksburg, Mississippi, in the south—was one of the primary locales in which the blues originated and developed.

James's eerie, distinctive style is reflected throughout Johnson's recordings, most notably in " Blues," which he adapted from James's " Blues. Johnson's first session in San Antonio took place over three days — November 23, 26, and 27, Sixteen songs were recorded in the Gunter Hotel , where ARC had set up equipment to record several musical artists.

Most of the selections were released on Vocalion 78 rpm records , but three songs and several interesting alternate takes remained unissued until they appeared on the Columbia albums. This time 13 songs were recorded and 10 were released during the following year. While Robert Johnson's professional recording career can be measured in months, his musical legacy has survived more than 70 years.

Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf , two prominent Chicago bluesmen, have their roots in the Delta: both knew Robert Johnson , and were heavily influenced by him. Johnson's emotive vocals, combined with his varied and masterful guitar playing, continue to influence blues and popular music performers to this day.
