Two music videos Hell hound on my trail and Devils Blues. The opening of "Crossroad Blues" absolutely made me tingle, with that stunning bottleneck and Johnson's incredible wailing of despair. There's so much going on at the same time to think its a solo performance still blows my mind, he is doing the work of at least 3 separate people.. This isn't the Led Zeppelin version You can see clearly how this inspired many great rock artists..

I am excited about the 2-CD set of his complete track output. The two marvelous recent Sony CDs total up to only 34 tracks, so 8 have been relegated to the domain of the boxed set, which drowns everything in noise reduction but hey, at least it offered them.
It is my hope it won't be sequenced like the boxed set with the master take followed by the alternate take, but I won't complain much even if it is. The more I listen to Robert Johnson, the better it gets.

There is another post about this set that just doesn't get what the vinyl set is supposed to duplicate. The source material is 78 rpm records.
The other review fails to understand that these are the Masters. The songs were recorded direct-to-dics. There weren't tape decks back then. Recordings were cut to wax with an actual lathe live as the musician played and sang.
A metal mold was made of the wax and acetates were made from these molds. It were these molds that were sought after for this collection. If not available, the best of the original pressing were located. So what you get is 45 rpm pressing that duplicate the records that would have been sold while Johnson was recording.
They are collected in a very fine leather bound book with leaf to hold the contained record. Yes there are some compromises. Why not 78 rpm? Well the best modern turntables don't usually have this speed. So 45 rpm is a justifiable compromise.
Why not make acetates? Well vinyl is quieter. So this is more than justified. Mind you, this collection wasn't made for the masses. Only were made. It was only available from 2 sources. Direct from Sony or Acoustic Sounds. So what do you get? You get a modern interpretation of what was sold at the time of original release. Extensive searches we done to find the best source material. It's playable on analog equipment.
It's wonderfully packaged and collected. And it sounds great. The packaging was done for a very special occasion, Robert Johnson's th birthday.
