Not only had the Stones outlasted their rivals in The Beatles , they had become a band that could seemingly do no wrong, even when they were doing things that were very wrong.
But if Exile on Main Street represented a seance-like communion with their most sacred old-school influences blues, gospel, country , Goats Head Soup was where the spell was broken and the Stones had to contend with the fact that they were a veteran band entering their second decade amid a rapidly changing musical landscape.
Glam rock was setting new standards for provocation and transgression, while the fiercest, grittiest street music was coming from the world of funk. So on Goats Head Soup , the Stones landed somewhere between the New York Dolls and Isaac Hayes, straining to push themselves to new heights of campy outrageousness while seriously engaging with the contemporary Black music of the day in a way that would have a lasting effect on their rhythmic DNA. Goats Head Soup was a far more disjointed experience, its recording locations—Kingston, London, Los Angeles—indicative of a band that was starting to drift apart.

The album's reissue attracted numerous reviews, with many agreeing that the album marked the beginning of the group's decline after a string of very well-received albums.
Gallucci felt that although the Stones didn't "bottom out" until 's Black and Blue , Goats Head Soup is where their decline began.
Although he found that the new mix does enhance the album more than its original mix, it is "still sludgy, it still drags at points and it still occasionally comes off as lazy coasting by a band that felt it didn't have to try anymore now that it was on top of the world.
He ultimately concluded that with the reissue, Goats Head Soup "now feels historic". He states that the album is where "their ascension" began to wane and "the idea of the Rolling Stones became just as important as the band itself.
He also praised the unreleased tracks, writing that "Criss Cross" would have "easily" been a highlight if it was on the original album. The remaster was initially released in a Collector's Edition CD, which replicated in miniature many elements of the original gatefold album packaging.
The first pressing of the remaster contains a censored version of "Star Star" that was on the original US vinyl release, but not on the Virgin CD; later pressings contain the uncensored version. Deluxe editions of the album featured never-before-released outtakes such as "Criss Cross", released as a music video on 9 July , "Scarlet", featuring Jimmy Page , released as a music video on 8 August , and "All the Rage".
