I Just Can't Leave You B What made the album interesting--then and now--was that it was issued in true stereo, and would, unfortunately, be the only stereo material of Harpo's to see release.
It's been rumoured that Excello recorded quite a few of Slim's sessions on multitrack; but if so, those tapes are MIA. A subsequent compilation was a mix of stereo and rechanneled cuts, but the stereo came from this Lp. Ed Bishop , Aug 26, Location: NS, Canada. Fine sound finer given how crappy some Excello vinyl is , getting a bit pricey on eBay by now, I would think, went in and out of print fast. Hi Ed, One of my favorite blues albums. Jay's studio was very slow to go multitrack. The early pressings are the ones to get. The last pressings of Excello albums were really bad quality. Back when I was a wee lad, I was often sent to bring my uncle home at dinnertime from the uh Remember hearing Slim Harpo's Baby Scratch My Back and Shake Your Hips on the jukebox while the ladies of questionable repute steamed up the dance floor in their tight shimmy dresses.
Poker games,dim lit pool tables,the wafting fragrance of perfume,cigars and hard liquior-quite the sensory overload for a young innocent kid innocent for a couple more years, anyway. Towards the end of his brief life, however, Slim was busy modifying his blues with elements drawn from the then-voguish soul and progressive rock genres. At the time of their first release, many blues purists were apt to dismiss these trends and recordings out of hand.
With hindsight, though, the blues produced at the end of Slim's career sound as strong as anything he recorded earlier and they benefit from the weight added to the musical fidelity by their improved studio sound and stereo recording.
