However, they are fantastic performers and excellent musicians. Their latest recording, Wheels of Fire, a two-record set inside a silver jacket, proves all this. The Sonny Bono-ish production job adds little. The Flag wins. The transition from verse to chorus is absolutely absurd. Ginger Baker stands out on glockenspiel. Clapton is totally absent from this cut; Ginger Baker uses only his high hat and Bruce plays acoustic guitar and cello.
The way they play back and forth and with each other, each on the melody together, is musicianship worthy of their reputation. The trumpet solos spoil whatever mood was trying to be evoked by their superfluous ness and obviousness.
Jones wrote for Albert King. His throaty breathing is just plain wrong. Ginger Baker also ought to learn that knocking on a cowbell and woodblock does not make a song funky. Because only rarely do they have a good original song to work with, their standard procedure is to put a strong rhythm and chord structure behind it and sort of recite the lyrics, spoken almost rather than sung because there is no melody.

German Albums Offizielle Top . Norwegian Albums VG-lista . US Billboard . Not the music of course this particular version was a waste of money. Sure the compression on the former makes the overall volume louder and as a result certain details are more evident but the reduced dynamic range is a costly tradeoff and for me the latter release allows the recording to breathe more and hence comes across much warmer. This is not to say that the former is poor sound quality but the compression means too many bass notes sound muddy or so close to overdrive that it affects my overall enjoyment of the whole listening experience.
Give this fan the DCC Gold which for now for the reasons mentioned above remains my favourite sound quality-wise. I've always thought "Disraeli Gears" to be Cream's best album but after a few listens, I'm actually finding myself liking at least disc one at least as much if not a little better than that other classic rock jewel.
Clapton's cover of the late great Albert King's "Born Under a Bad Sign" while not quite as good as the original is still a nice track in what is overall a great album. I didn't enjoy the live second disc as much although I thought "Crossroads" was fantastic and worth the purchase of the whole set alone. This album is required listening for all aspiring rock guitarists and together with "Disraeli Gears" surely ranks among the top 25 all-time great classic albums of all time and this DCC Gold release for the sound quality alone makes this an easy review.
Highly recommended! I was lucky enough to see Cream a couple of time's. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries.
Probably the best of the power trios of the sixties. They used to be known as progressive blues men, but they don't fit into modern categories so easily. They were very loud and very heavy when live, and you'll never know if you weren't there.
This live album still rocks. I took the chance and purchased the album, the seller contacted me to ensure that I was aware the album was well played. A good and polite service and what a great find, the album sounds great and is obviously from a collection of someone who loves this music, it has been played a lot but not abused. If you like blues rock with a feeling you cannot go wrong with cream, music played with an obvious respect for what they do and a professionalism that is reflected in the longevity of this album.
If you can find this album on vinyl don't hesitate to add it to your collection. Report abuse. Eric Clapton at his live best. Had the LP when I was about some time ago! Ginger Baker is amazing as always. Fine drummer. The late Jack Bruce at his best too - both live and studio. I first bought this on vinyl while still at school. Hearing it now on CD only confirms to me why it had such an effect back then. Three musicians at the top of their game with Eric Clapton arguably the least gifted or the three on his chosen instrument.
A wonderful studio album and a wonderful live album. I will never tire of listening to 16 minutes of Spoonful.
And was it not Crossroads that led John peel to quip "and now tell me there are only three of them. A great combination of talent, energy and creativity. A must for any musician.
