If you want a sense of the Stones' oeuvre over five decades, this does a nice job. I knew I liked most of the songs on this basic 2CD collection, but adding maybe 6 classics which were noted as missing by some of the reviewers here made it a superior collection.
I am not bothered by the few "shortened" versions but do notice them right away including missing the choral intro on "You Can't Always Get What You Want".
The sound quality in my car, which came with better speakers, is very good after ripping it to a flash. I'm reviewing the 2 disc set but the same would apply to the 3 CD set though some of the songs on it aren't as ubiquitous. There are two approaches to this. The first would be for the new Stones fan, the second for the long timers.
Taking the long timers first, there is little reason to buy this. Most of those in this category, myself included, already have these and perhaps many time over. Also I do like the cover. The songs, for the most part, have stood the test of time. A handful were purely U. To have a good understanding of the Stones mystique one needs nothing more. Some of these released in the past 20 years are not classic rock staples but perhaps should be.
Beginning on the 2nd disc with cut 11 a lot of new fans may find themselves hearing songs that are completely new to them and being coupled with the greats may take their place along side them with those who will embrace these 40 songs as there Rolling Stones bible.
It's hard to say buy this 2 CD or 3 above all else the Stones have out there for purchase. But if you do you'll be highly satisfied. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. This is a bargain but the early recordings still don't sound great. I hope this medium takes off. When it's good it's very good. I'm into vinyl and it still takes some beating but the blu ray is very clear sounding but with a relaxed feel to it, unlike most CD releases. I'm hoping the record companies re-release a number of albums on the one disc as the capacity of the blu-ray is far greater.
I've only listened on a cheapo Sony blu-ray player and it sounds very good. I don't know if the medium takes the player quality out of the equation but it may well sound even better on an Opp or Cambridge Audio universal player.
Jazz always seems to be recorded to a higher quality though. Ok, the first few songs on the disc are from very early on in the Stones career and are very thin sounding but as far as i am concerned they, and the rest of the tracks on this disc, are exact copies of the original studio master tapes. If you have a good quality Blu-Ray player connected to a good amplifier and speakers then invest in this and other 'H.
A' discs. Running time of 3 hours and 8 mins, 50 songs from the Rolling Stones all for less than a tenner. This Blu-Ray sound quality on this issue is excellent throughout.
The only reason that it failed to get 5 stars from me is because: 1. A lost opportunity I think. Finally, I hope we can now look forward to the re-issue of the Stones' entire Decca and Rolling Stones Records' back catalogues in this superb Blu-Ray audio format in due course. I'm giving this disc an unreserved 5 stars because it's an exceptional bargain and the audio quality through a blu-ray player I used PCM audio is exceptional.
Even the early 4 track recordings sound detailed and amazing. I can easily hear instruments and voices that I'd never noticed before in the background and even complex mixes like 'Sympathy' are open and easy to resolve. This truly is how music should be heard and as far away from mp3 as a Starship is from a goose!
One page contains all the tracks numerically and the audio options. The user can use their cursor keys to navigate the tracks and options but on my player at least the flashing icon indicating where you are on the screen is almost identical in colour to the text and literally can't be seen under most circumstances.
