Tool Undertow

Tool Undertow

Having proven themselves with the Opiate EP, which they recorded in a mere four days, Tool took more time to track Undertow -- nearly three whole weeks. At the time it seemed like an eternity and the extra hours gave Tool the ability to approach their new songs from different angles.

But with the luxury of experimentation came the need to make tough decisions. Emotion might be captured on the tape, but the performance sucked. And then you have an awesome performance, but the emotion was null and void. This is no longer about the raw stuff. He also wanted the band to play heavier music.

And that became more and more apparent over time. Compared to the three epic albums Tool released from to , Undertow is more raw, immediate and visceral. In some versions of the album, when the black CD tray is removed from the case, a picture of a cow licking what appears to be its genital region is revealed.

In other versions of the album, released internationally, the picture of the cow licking the genital region is viewable without problems under the transparent backing of the disc case. The photo of the cow is accredited in the album's liner notes to have been taken by Danielle Bregman. The ribcage is also on the front cover of the album, but the obese woman is absent from the booklet; only the members of the band are depicted.

Adam Jones ' pet pig, Moe, appears on the back cover [7] amid an array of forks standing on end. AllMusic gave the album a positive review, stating "With its technical brilliance, musical complexities, and aggressive overtones, Undertow not only paved the way for several bands to break through to the mainstream adolescent mall-rage demographic, it also proved that metal could be simultaneously intelligent, emotional, and brutal.

What put this L. In a Dotdash bibliographical article of the band, reviewer Tim Grierson called the album the "Essential Tool Album" and stated "It may be impossible to describe the impact that Undertow had at the time of its release in Searching, angry, liberating and scary, Tool's full-length debut emerged during a period in rock music when Seattle bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam were expressing alienation through grunge riffs, inspiring lots of copycat artists.

Undertow expressed alienation, too, but the album's imposing waves of misery and dread seemed to come from an entirely different planet than grunge, providing a startling counterpoint to the trendy sounds of the era".

Which really isn't what we deserve. It also appears as track 39, track 10 mostly in Europe and Australia or as a hidden track following "Flood" on track nine. On certain Japanese imports, "Disgustipated" is track In all cases, however, it is listed as track 10 on the album itself. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The band members' instruments are listed under aliases in the liner notes.

Retrieved April 7, Retrieved January 18, Just as grunge was reaching its boiling point and radio-friendly punk-pop loomed on the horizon, Tool released Undertow , which firmly reinforced metal's prominence as a musical style [ July 2, Still, Tool insisted the music do the talking. Paired to the sounds they were generating, it felt like a natural fit. Label pressure from Zoo Entertainment on Opiate had seen the band forced to front-up with their heaviest material for a metal scene on the slide.

Having been able to reunite with rising star producer Sylvia Massey and retreat to the studio for a then-luxuriant three week recording process Opiate having been hammered out in four days , their sprawling vision — that full range of strangeness — started to bleed through. Sharp yet amorphous, angry but controlled, raw yet unapologetically intellectual, these were shapeshifting sounds from artists on another plane. There was much, admittedly, to rise above. Melding, to an extent, the steely outrage of Rage and the psyche-plumbing introversion of Nirvana , there was no lack of meat for Generation Xers to latch onto.

There was a bleeding-edge fearlessness in confronting subject matter as unpalatable as cyclical sexual abuse as head-on as they did on Prison Sex. It was a fight on which they were unafraid to throw punches. When outstanding visual artist Adam took on the creation of album artwork, the iconic red ribcage became a quick focal-point. A section of the artwork hidden within the original CD casing featured a cow licking its ass.

Typically, that led to U. The band quickly cobbled-together a censored version with a form fans could send away to receive the original artwork at no additional cost. On one level, the strange, unsettling imagery was enough to make folk shift uncomfortably in their seats. Critics were captivated by that subversion of the traditional inter-relationship between artist and audience, video and viewer.
